It took Barack Obama 17 minutes at the Democratic Convention in July 2004 to persuade millions of viewers that he had fresh ideas. It took San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom seven and a half hours to give his State of the City address in December 2008. Yes, you read that last sentence correctly—Newsom's presentation lasted more than seven hours. Newsom tried something different by delivering the entire 10-segment presentation on YouTube (GOOG). It was different all right. But it could have been more effective had he kept a few basic lessons in mind.

Active Home Internet Users by Country, November 2008 - ClickZ

Japan's active Internet user base went down by 1.16 percent. The rest of the countries observed increased in the number of active Internet users. The greatest gains in Internet users were seen by Spain (6.37 percent), the United States (3.45 percent), Brazil (3.14 percent), and France (2.83 percent).

He had subscribed to an automated computer backup service called Mozy, and he reconnected via his new laptop. That's when the Mozy service, which costs $5 per month for individuals, really paid off.

A new report from travel industry research authority PhoCusWright Inc. reveals that as the online leisure/unmanaged business travel market in the U.S. has matured, supplier Web sites and online travel agencies (OTAs) appear to have reached relatively stable market share. PhoCusWright's Online Travel Overview Eighth Edition, finds that supplier sites account for 61% of the online market vs. 39% for OTAs in 2008. This balance is projected to hold steady through 2010, although intense competition and tumultuous dynamics underlie this uneasy equilibrium.

US Search Ad Spending Falters? - eMarketer

Search advertising used to be reliable and solid, but growth is slowing even in this stalwart segment of the online economy.

US search advertising spending fell 8% year over year in Q4 2008, according to search marketing firm Efficient Frontier. The company said it was the first quarterly decline on a year-over-year basis since it began monitoring search ad spending.

Although it took a serious recession, hotel companies are making their loyalty programs more attractive. As a result, loyalty travelers will be recipients of some of the best incentives in years.

Marriott International, Hilton Hotels Corp. and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide eliminated blackout dates for hotel reward redemption.

Marriott also began allowing loyalty program members to create their own awards and giving top-level participants membership in Clear, a service that helps registered travelers navigate bottlenecks at airport security.
